August Boxing Preview & Thoughts

August 13, 2016

Rosarito Mexico:Antonio Margarito vs. Ramon Alvarez (10 Rounds)

Whenever Antonio Maragrito is involved, boxing watches like a bad train wreck. We just never know what to expect. I have to watch him take on Canelo's older and lesser known brother. Ramon has zero signature wins and talent wise might be both past their prime. It's a wash given Margarito didn't look good in his last fight and who knows whether his eye holds up. Had I known about this fight sooner I would've planned a weekend trip to Rosarito which is always a good time. Stay tuned to see how this novela plays out. If Margarito wins, it'll be interesting to see if good ol' Bob Arum tries to promote his fighter onto an HBO Fight card next year.

Rochester, New York (Showtime)

Bakhtiyar Eyubov vs. Karim Mayfield, 10 rounds, welterweights

Karim Mayfield has always been a highly touted prospect that never materialized. Even under the tutelage of the great Virgil Hunter, Mayfield's career has been at a stand still. Rumorville has it he's got some big personality issues that rub people the wrong way. One of the only fighters to ever truly beat Mauricio Herrera without the help of judges, Mayfield has got a lot of game for 140 lber.

Mayfield looks to get his career back on track under the Showtime Network this August 19th; he's facing a relatively unknown, but highly touted undefeated opponent from Kazakhstan -- Bakhtiyar Eyubov. It should a tough fight for both men, a classic matchup between power puncher versus defensive fighter with decent power. I wouldn't miss this one!

Brooklyn, New York (PBC on NBC)

Errol Spence Jr. vs. Leonard Bundu, 12 rounds, IBF welterweight eliminator

Most knowledgeable fans understand "The Lion" Bundu is just a stepping stone for Errol Spence. He is a much different style opponent from Spencer's last opponent, Chris Algieri. Lundu can take a punch and his only loss to date is against Keith Thurman. That said, his wins are also very unimpressive with no big names on his resume.

Spencer is coming off an impressive win over Chris Algieri who was easily stopped early in their fight. I doubt Lundu has the power to knock out Spencer, but he may have the skills to last a full 12 rounds. If not, my guess is Spencer lands the knockout or late stoppage (rounds 8+). Spencer needs to continue steam rolling opponents with a little name recognition and put himself into a position for a title fight in 2017.

Anaheim, California PBC on Spike

Robert Guerrero vs. David Peralta, 12 rounds, welterweights

The header liner is going to be a snooze fest. Al Haymon is really trying to milk Guerrero’s “known” name as the fight takes place in Southern California. Even the Mexican American fan base realizes it will not be enough to put fans in the stand. Guerrero is to stationary, no longer has anything on his punches to hurt opponents and simply is one dimensional. He still has guts and for that fans stay interested. Let’s hope Guerrero’s next fight is his last – a rematch with Berto would be the best possible matchup. It’s long overdue and really the only win that really propelled Guerrero into “stardom”. Beating David Peralta doesn’t change this fact and is a very weak headliner even for free TV.

Alfredo Angulo vs. Freddy Hernandez, 10 rounds, super middleweights

This fight should have taken place in 2012. Now it’s just going to be a phone booth war. It might be entertaining to watch these guys slug it out but there won’t be much skill factor. Angulo no longer has knock down power and that was what made him likeable when he was in his prime.

More fights coming soon...
